Pierce County Flood Warning Updates: The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for Pierce County through Friday morning, December 12. River levels are high and may continue to rise.

  • Moderate to major flooding of properties, floodplains, and roads near the Carbon, Puyallup, White, and Nisqually rivers as well as the South Prairie, Clear, and Clarks creeks is occurring. Bank erosion along rivers and creeks is also possible.

Sumner Residents: For river forecasts, sandbag locations, and local road closures, please read the City of Sumner’s latest flood update for current impacts in the Sumner area.

  • Sumner is experiencing flooding along the White and Puyallup rivers. Stewart Rd Bridge, Houston Rd, State St under 410, and the full Sumner Link Trail are closed.
  • ACTIVE ALERTS
    • White River: Level 1 (Be Ready) for neighborhoods near 29th St and nearby industrial areas.
    • Puyallup River: Level 2 (Be Set) for Rainier Manor, Riverwalk Condos, and The Retreat.
  • Please sign up for PC Alert to receive any overnight evacuation updates.

Warming Centers: Multiple warming centers are available across the area.

Sandbags: Self-serve sandbags available at Stations 116 and 119. Please bring a shovel.

Pierce County Planning & Public Works: Active Response
  • Pierce County Planning and Public Works will continue to monitor river and road conditions, assess infrastructure for flood impacts, and respond to roadway issues.
  • Teams will be out overnight identifying areas where flooding is occurring and where infrastructure may be affected.
  • During daylight hours, crews will continue assessing flood risk reduction infrastructure such as levees and revetments for any damage and will develop repair plans if needed.
  • Crews will also work to clear blocked storm drainage facilities when possible, address downed trees, and close roads or lanes as conditions require.
Preparedness Tips
If you live or work along a river or creek, take time now to:
  • Secure your belongings and property.
  • Make a plan for your family members, pets, and livestock.
  • Stock emergency kits for your home, car, and work.
  • If you live near a storm drain, make sure it is clear of leaves and other debris. If the storm drain is blocked, please contact us at www.PierceCountyWa.gov/Works.

Safety Tips
  • Stay away from river edges during and after high water events.
  • Don’t turn your back on the river and keep an eye out for debris.
  • Don’t drive or walk through flood waters, around road closure barricades, or near a landslide or downed utility lines.

  • EPIC (the East Pierce Interlocal Coalition) includes the cities and towns of Bonney Lake, Buckley, Carbonado, Orting, Puyallup, South Prairie, Sumner, and Wilkeson. Sign up for local emergency notifications here.
  • Sumner Residents: Per Sumner, if we need to send any notices of evacuations or impacts, we are using the Pierce County Alert system. To sign up your business or residence, go to PC Alert. It helps to sign up your full address. If you sign up just with your zip code, you’ll get all alerts for 98390 and not know if flooding is impacting your specific area or not.
Evacuation Shelters

If you and/or your loved ones have been displaced by flooding, there is a 24-hour shelter open at Meridian Habitat Park. All are welcome. More information from American Red Cross Northwest Region.

Sandbags
Looking for sand bags? As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, here are locations in Pierce County handing out sand bags.
Please call the specific location to ensure supply is still available. Sites subject to change.
  • Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, Station 96 (12827 224th St. E., Graham).
  • East Pierce Fire & Rescue has two free self-serve sites at Station 119 (350 SR 162, South Prairie) and behind Station 116 (10515 234th Ave E., Buckley). Please bring a shovel.
  • City of Tacoma Government provides free, self-serve sandbag materials at the Tacoma Asphalt Plant (3010 Center St., Tacoma), Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • West Pierce Fire & Rescue has bags outside of Station 31 (3631 Drexler Drive W., University Place) with the sand pile located in the vacant lot across from the station.
