Sumner Grade Wildfire Updates

For current Bonney Lake/Sumner wildfire information:

All evacuation zones have been downgraded to Level 1- Information can be found at www.cobl.us.

- Text “pcalert” to 888777 and sign up for updates. Note: when entering code use all lower case, no dashes, one word: pcalert. **The system geolocates people within the evacuation areas the fire and police departments are designating. You will not receive a notice if you live outside of areas being evacuated. **

Thursday, September 24th
  • Fire is 100% contained.

Wednesday, September 16th
  • 5:00 pm - This is the final update...Containment remains at 95% as we await rain.
  • 8:00 am - Fire at 95% containment.  Some smoldering and smoke will continue to be visible inside the control perimeter in previously burned areas. EPFR will patrol areas to ensure public safety.  Please only call 911 if you see flames directly threatening people or structures.

Tuesday, September 15th
  • 8:00 am - SR 410 and Myers Rd have re-opened! "Local access only" restrictions have been lifted.

Monday, September 14th
  • Fire now at 85% containment
  • Crews are still working on State Route 410 and it will reopen as soon as possible. SR 410 is being evaluated constantly and we are working hard to get it open for normal use.
  • Anticipated transition from State Mobilization Strike Teams back to East Pierce Fire & Rescue tomorrow at 6 pm.

Sunday, September 13th
  • 6:00 pm - All evacuated residents able to return home, but still at Level 1. Level 1 means BE READY to go again should conditions change.
  • Fire now at 65% containment
  • Actual acres burned updated to 494 (due to the ability to walk the perimeter)

Saturday, September 12th
  • 5:03 pm - Fire now at 50% containment and phased re-entry plan updated at www.cobl.us.
  • 8:00 am - Fire 30% contained

Friday, September 11th
  • 2:15 pm - New phased re-entry maps will be available at 6 pm tonight at www.cobl.us.
  • 11:30 am - Fire maintains 20% containment
  • 8:30 am - Press briefing scheduled for 2:00 pm today (news media only)
  • WSDOT and emergency managers are keeping SR 410 (between mileposts 11.4 to 13.3) closed through this weekend and into next week until further inspections can be performed. This date could change given the active wildfire situation in the area. Travelers can detour using SR 165 and SR 162.
    Before the highway can re-open, Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews need to replace long sections of scorched guardrail. In addition, crews will inspect the hillside for large rocks or other debris that could fall on to the highway.

Thursday, September 10th 
  • 9:30 pm - Flames are more visible at night.  Please only call 911 if you see flames that are threatening a structure.
  • 8:30 pm - We’ve received an overwhelming number of offers to provide food/drinks for first responders. Unfortunately, to protect our firefighters and in light of COVID-19 concerns and the lack of logistical resources to facilitate them, we are unable to accept any food/drink donations.
  • 5:00 pm - Phased Re-Entry-Residents affected by the Sumner Grade Fire are now allowed a PHASED re-entry to their homes. NOT ALL RESIDENTS ARE CLEARED TO RE-ENTER THEIR HOMES.  Maps are available at www.cobl.us.
  • 11:00 am -  No reports of looting in the Bonney Lake area.  Extra officers patrolling evacuated areas.
  • 9:00 am - Fire maintains 20% containment
  • 7:00 am - No Changes to evacuation zone or level.  SR 410 remains closed between Sumner (166th) and Bonney Lake (Veterans Memorial Drive E)
Wednesday, September 9th
  • Fire 20% contained
  • No Changes to evacuation zone or level, but those near the border of the zone should be prepared to evacuate on short notice.  SR 410 remains closed between Sumner (166th) and Bonney Lake (Veterans Memorial Drive E)
Tuesday, September 8th

  • SR 410 closed between Sumner (166th) and Bonney Lake (Veterans Memorial Drive E)
  • Crews have a fire line around the wildfire in Bonney Lake.
  • A State Mobilization request has been approved to obtain more resources on the fire ground. Resources are very limited with fires happening in other areas of the State. The State has named the fire "Sumner Grade Fire".
  • Door-to-door evacuation notices have been made in certain areas.
  • SR410 is closed in both directions between mile post 13.37/181st Ave E and mile post 11.46/166th Ave E.
