A fire in Puyallup between Sumner and Orting has destroyed a home just off of State Route 162. The original call to 9-1-1, at 2 a.m. Monday, stated that a neighbor heard a loud explosion, then looked out the window to see the house, on the 15000 block of 106th Street East, engulfed in flames. East Pierce Fire and Rescue firefighters will accompany Santa during his annual visit to local neighborhoods in Bonney Lake, Sumner, Lake Tapps, Prairie Ridge, South Prairie, Wilkeson, Edgewood and Milton. Santa’s visit is sponsored by the International Association of Firefighters Local No. 3520 with assistance from the East Pierce Volunteer Firefighters’ Association. East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a shooting following a home invasion just before 11 p.m. Monday at the 25000 block of 164th Street East in rural Pierce County between the towns of South Prairie and Wilkeson. Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue, Buckley Fire Department and Orting Valley Fire and Rescue converged on a barn fire at 9:30 p.m. last night at the 10900 block of 258th Avenue East. When they arrived, the barn was about 40 percent involved, reports East Pierce Acting Battalion Chief Lance Schinkal. Just after midnight Sunday, a single vehicle left the road at the 22700 block of the Sumner-Buckley Highway between Buckley and Bonney Lake, hit a power pole, traveled approximately 150 feet and landed in a ditch. East Pierce Fire and Rescue firefighters used the “Jaws of Life” to remove a driver from his vehicle after a crash at 6 p.m. Friday, on the 26300 block of Sumner-Buckley Highway. East Pierce Fire and Rescue has armed local police officers in Edgewood, Milton and now Sumner with an important life-saving tool-- automated external defibrillators (AEDs). “The theory is to get the AED to the patient as quickly as possible,” says East Pierce Battalion Chief Jeff Moore. “Law enforcement defibrillation is a proven concept around the country. On March 19, 2013, Dave Wagner died five times after suffering a type of heart attack called the “widow maker.” Three days later, he was discharged from the hospital with only minimal damage to his heart and is back to leading a normal life with his family. Two people were seriously injured in a personal watercraft crash on Lake Tapps just after 5 p.m. Friday. A motor home that was being demolished for scrap caught fire around 4 p.m. Wednesday, sending a huge plume of black smoke into the sky at the north end of Lake Tapps. In a special election, voters in the City of Milton and those who live in the East Pierce fire district overwhelmingly approved a measure to officially annex Milton into the fire district. Early results indicate that 85 percent of Milton voters support the annexation. Safeway Produce Clerk Austin Bergstrom knew something was wrong with regular customer Penny Maier. “She wasn’t acting right, so I kept an eye on her,” he says. When he saw her collapse, he realized he was the only employee in the area. Fortunately, he knew what to do. As a Boy Scout, Bergstrom, age 17, had been trained in first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). He ran to the Customer Service desk and told them to call 911. The flu bug has finally hit Washington State. Some of the first to see the influx are the firefighter- paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who transport ill patients to area hospitals. Over the past two weeks, Pierce County hospitals are also reporting an increase in the number of patients they are treating with the flu.
